One-Story Floor Plans
A home built all on one level is now a priority for many people building a new home. While a tall skinny or a multi-level home may have worked for younger families, today’s homeowners are finding that one story construction provides far greater flexibility on how spaces adapt over time and how accessible a whole home remains as people age in place.
“While building up (or down for a basement) may be more affordable than out, people of all ages soon find stairs as tedious,” said Josh Beasley, president of Honest Abe Log Homes. “A smartly designed single story home avoids stairs that could become an obstacle in later stages of life or even during an unexpected injury.”
Beasley said Honest Abe is seeing more families with children building primary homes than in the past when many log cabins or timber frame homes were built for vacations or as a second home.
“Building a dream home in retirement has been the goal of many, but younger couples are realizing they want to provide their kids with the environment and atmosphere that a log and timber home provides,” Beasley said. “For that reason, they’re adjusting what their dream looks like, choosing to trade out size and amenities for building a home now that their family can create memories in. They’ve realized that when the kids move out, it’s too late.”
