Experience proves that gender plays a role in design decisions.

Bedrooms and Kitchens

After 27 years of creating log custom log homes, we’ve noticed that gender plays a role in the design of log homes. It seems that women are usually much more concerned about the design of the kitchen and dining area than their partner, unless, of course, it’s the man who handles most of the culinary responsibilities. Generally, women like to plan the master suite, and that includes the closets, dressing areas and master bath. Actually, women are more concerned with all the bedroom planning, especially for the children.

Bathrooms

Guys are surprisingly vocal about the bathroom they will be using most, or at least about the area where they will be getting ready for the day, making this an area where a couple really exercises compromise.

Recreation

Men tend to focus on the areas the most envision themselves using. They’re usually very outspoken about the den, game room or bar.

Offices

More and more homes are now including offices, and both partners expect to plan that space together. However, we’re even seeing some couples plan his and hers offices. Others designate a specific room for a hobby or pastime.

Auxiliary Buildings

Men usually have a plan for the outdoor buildings like garages or carports, sheds or workshops. That’s not to say that many women take pride in their lawn and gardens, and “she sheds” are becoming very popular. This video illustrates how one couple made decisions together about planning of their outdoor spaces to accommodate their needs and interests as a couple and individuals.

Relaxation Spaces

Spaces for relaxation as a couple or family are clearly a joint effort. These include patios and porches, outdoor entertainment areas, pools and spas and the family or great room.

No Rules!

Of course, there are no rules here. Every situation is different, but it may be helpful early in the home planning process to discuss the subject of who will take primary responsibility for design concepts and decisions. As exciting as it is to build a home, admittedly, it can be stressful. Exploring each person’s desires, ideas and expectations while recognizing their interests, strengths and passions can make the process more harmonious and produce a home both people imagined.
