Let’s first talk about what exactly an interior designer is, and then we will get into why you should hire one.

According to Wikipedia, interior design is “the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space.”

An interior designer is someone who plans, researches, coordinates, and manages such projects. In other words, an interior designers’ job is to make a space beautiful and functional all at the same time. They meet the needs of those who are going to be in the space and make it functional for its every use. The design of a space affects how you live, work, and even play. Comfortable homes, functional workplaces    – that’s interior design at work!

I know what you are thinking: anyone can place a lamp on a table and “style” it with a family photo or two and a few nick-knacks here and there and call it design. You are absolutely correct. Anyone can, and some without a formal education in the field, some are quite good at it too.

What you won’t get in most cases, however, is a space that has been drawn out, thought about and looked at from every angle possible and then arranged it in a way that works for the ones who will use the space day in and day out. An Interior designer prides themselves on making a space work most effectively and most efficiently. They want the result to be as close to perfection as possible, and the time they take to think of all the details, both large and small, will always show in their design.

An interior designer designs with purpose, there is always a reason for a particular placement of a furniture piece or color choice used

on a project. Each aspect has a job and the designer puts it to work for the space it is placed in, because in the end, if it doesn’t work well, it doesn’t belong.

Now, I realize this seems like a lot of “thinking,” and what is that worth as far as dollars and cents are concerned? So, I ask you this, would you rather have a magazine-worthy home that you can live out your days in or one just thrown together with mismatched furniture and styles and call it a day. Is that your dream living situation? If not, call a designer, let them work for you and for your home, let them bring all the ideas you have been collecting and thinking of for years to life.

A professional designer will think of things that may never have crossed your mind and will most likely save you money by knowing tricks and cost-effective tips in ordering items needed for every aspect of your project.

A designer can come in on the front end of a new build and guide you on wall placements so all the furniture you want, will actually fit in your home. They can also come in after you have lived in your home for many years and want to step it up a notch to do the things you wish would have when you first moved in.

In short, hire the designer, invest in your biggest investment and live in a well-designed, functional and absolutely beautiful home you can show to everyone who enters the space!
