Honest Abe homeowner Sondra DuBose and husband Lennard designed their own timber frame home. The center of the 3,200 SF home is an open floor plan with a smooth flow through the kitchen, dining and living spaces.

“A kitchen-centric great room is perfect for today’s casual living,” Sondra said. “Those formal dining and living rooms just aren’t compatible with the modern family, and a kitchen great room is a great way to enjoy family and friends in a cozy, relaxed atmosphere.”

According to Sondra, the advantages of a kitchen-centric great room include,

  • Social Time – The cook/cleanup crew can interact with family and friends before and after mealtime.
  • Monitoring The Kids – Parents can take care of chores and household duties and keep an eye on the kids at the same time.
  • Increased Natural Light and Views – Adding more windows.
  • Easier To Entertain – Guests naturally gravitate to the kitchen, and the cook can be involved before, during and after the meal.

The contrast of dark and light products against heavily stained logs, created a feminine touch, in a dominantly designed masculine cabin,” Sondra observed, noting that Wellington Ivory Glaze Kitchen Base and Americana Capital Nutmeg Shadow Glaze on Atlanta Raised Panel Maple was used for the island. “The cabinets were installed 9.5″ away from the exterior, careful not to diminish the integrity of the logs, thus creating a decorative shelf. The color pallet was decided very easily. The more wood tones used within the space, the more options you have to foster your unique style. The countertops are Granite, tying the contrast together as well as break up the space and add light to the area.”

Among the DuBose’s product choices for their own kitchen were Pella doors and windows; a Delta rubber bronze touch-free faucet kit; a 30″ (X2 basin, each 15″ each) Farm Sink – “Franke” by Villeroy & Boch; KitchenAid – 24″ tall tub built-in see-through dishwasher; Thor Kitchen Professional 48″ free-standing gas stove w/convection electric ovens; and a Samsung Refrigerator Wi-Fi enabled, family Hub 27.9 cu ft. French door with ice maker.
