Following a fall log home maintenance checklist for your log cabin can make for a much less expensive autumn, winter and spring. Here is the Honest Abe Log Homes’ checklist for preparing for colder months.

1.    Clean gutters and downspouts: Leaf debris can accumulate in your gutters and downspouts, causing water to back up and potentially damage your roof and walls. Cleaning out your gutters in the fall can help prevent this from happening.

2.    Inspect and repair roof damage: Fall is a good time to inspect your roof for any damage caused by summer storms. If you find any missing or damaged shingles, have them repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

3.    Check and clean your chimney: If you use your fireplace regularly, it’s important to have your chimney inspected and cleaned to prevent the buildup of creosote, which can cause chimney fires.

4.    Check and replace weatherstripping: As the temperature starts to drop, you’ll want to make sure that your home is well-sealed to keep out drafts and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Check the weatherstripping around your windows and doors and replace any that is worn or damaged.

5.    Service your heating system: Before the cold weather arrives, have your heating system inspected and serviced by a professional to ensure that it is operating safely and efficiently.

6.    Insulate your attic: Adding insulation to your attic can help keep your home warm in the winter and reduce your energy bills.

7.    Check outdoor pipes: As the temperature starts to drop, it’s important to make sure that your outdoor pipes are properly insulated to prevent them from freezing.

8.    Inspect and clean your sump pump: If you have a sump pump, fall is a good time to check that it is working properly and clean out any debris that may have accumulated in it.

9.    Clean and store outdoor furniture and equipment: As the weather starts to get colder, it’s a good idea to clean and store your outdoor furniture and equipment to protect them from the elements.

10.   Check and replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors: It’s important to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home to keep you and your family safe. Make sure to check and replace the batteries in all of your detectors at the beginning of fall.
